Courses

Health Informatics is a diverse, multi-disciplinary field incorporating aspects of clinical medicine, medical science, computer science, public health, evidence-based medicine, decision theory, statistics, health economics, data mining, knowledge management and risk assessment.

The aim of Health Informatics is to improve communication, understanding and management of medical information. The end objective is to bring together the data, knowledge and the tools necessary to apply that data and knowledge in the decision-making process, at the time and place that a decision needs to be made.

The Adelaide University Health Informatics Unit specialises in health decision analysis and the development and implementation of evidence-based decision support tools. The focus of development is towards risk management systems that consider both patient risk and health process workflow in the application of evidence-based medicine.

Postgraduate Degrees

Applicants must pass Adelaide University entry requirements for entry to Masters or PhD programs. Please email a brief CV and outline of area of interest.

For examples of current PhD projects, please see our Research page.

The Health Informatics Unit has collaborators in the fields of: General Medicine, Pharmacy, Emergency Medicine, Intensive Care, Respiratory Medicine, Cardiology, Surgery, Histopathology, Paediatrics, Anaesthesia, Rheumatology, Bioinformatics.

Undergraduate Teaching

Staff and collaborators of the Health Informatics Unit provide teaching to both the Medicine and Nursing undergraduate degrees at the University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia .

Undergraduate Projects

Fourth Year Medical students are required to complete a research component during the year. Current requirements are a research proposal, including a literature review and preliminary data. We encourage students to use this as an opportunity to understand and enjoy health informatics and research work, as well as to publish and present their work.

Students may choose to attach themselves to current Health Informatics Unit projects and investigate an associated area, or they may investigate a topic of their choice in collaboration with an appropriate Hospital or University Department. All areas of medicine are relevant to Health Informatics, and we are willing to accommodate any project ideas.
