  • Registered medical practitioner.
  • Experience in commercialization of research ip in a Small/Medium Enterprise (SME). Successful in a National Comet grant, and patent application.
  • Development innovations in healthcare in collaboration with multiple stakeholders: Health department ( DHS SA), commercial partners (Microsoft, SME s), hospital management, clinical staff (unit heads, specialists, residents, nurses, pharmacists).
  • Risk analysis, risk management, patient safety, evidence-based medicine, guideline construction and implementation. Decision support systems (probabilistic and rules-based), medical decision making, decision analysis, cost-benefit and cost-effectiveness analysis.
  • Software engineering and in project management. Competent in object oriented design and implementation ( UML , Extreme programming, C/C ++, C #, Lisp, S-Plus, Matlab).
  • Electronic Health Records, medical terminology and knowledge representation. Workflow clinical modelling, statistical data mining.

Commercial

  • Vice president of Research and Development for Alcidion Corporation ( 2000- ), for the architecture and implementation of advanced decision support and point of care risk management systems for the healthcare industry. The system won the 2003 National Secrets in IT award.
  • Partner with Microsoft and Department of Human Services ( SA ) in the Microsoft/ Sa government Innovation Centre for the deployment of point of care risk management systems in two Adelaide teaching hospitals.
  • Consulting for Microsoft in Healthcare applications.
  • Consulting in patient safety for the National Health Service (NHS) UK .
  • Consulting in risk management for PerkinElmer Life Sciences.
  • Director of R&D for the Australian Patient Safety System ( 1999-2000 ) where I designed and directed the implementation of a logic-based system and patient safety ontology for incident reporting.
  • Consulting for the Department of Human Services ( SA ) in hospital workflow modelling and risk management.
  • Consulting for Kpmg & The Commonwealth Government in system modelling and data mining for the National Evaluation of Coordinated Care Trials.

Current Activities

  • The deployment of computerized evidence-based risk management systems for the prevention of common preventable errors, and improved compliance to clinical guidelines
  • he analysis and risk management of communication and workflow activity in clinical environments
  • Research in breast cancer spread and risk modelling.
  • Supervision of PhD and Masters students in, evidence-based medical decision making, and clinical workflow analysis modelling.
